Le Roux appointed physical trainer
By G. Viswanath

MUMBAI, MARCH 12. TEAM INDIA is complete with the appointment of South African Adrian as the physical trainer. The Indian team will leave for the West Indies with the coach John Wright, the physiotherapist Andrew Leipus and the physical trainer Le Roux.

Mention of the possibility of a physical trainer being added to the national team evoked mocking remarks from the captain of the Indian team which won its first series in the West Indies and England in the 1970-71 season.

Ajit Wadekar said in his weekly column in a broadsheet that, ``The way things are going, the day doesn't seem to be far when the team will comprise orthopaedic, anthropoid, paediatric and ayurvedic specialists.''

The former India captain, who spent three years as Cricket Manager of the Indian team is free to express his views. His opinion may not count in the present scheme of things. But there are silent supporters aplenty for him on specific points such as the BCCI's readiness to keep jobs open only for foreigners.

Wadekar's has been the lone voice openly expressing resentment, there's been no hue and cry at all. And that's because the BCCI, the then President Mr. Raj Singh Dungarpur in particular, made it clear that the Board was doing everything at the behest of the senior players. No reason was given to suggest that the players were disenchanted with native coaches since 1990.

The players told the BCCI that they needed a professional who knew the `A to Z' of dealing with national teams and had a good track record. Quite a few foreigners threw their hats in the ring, but the BCCI finally felt Wright had the right credentials for the job.

With Le Roux all set to join the team in the West Indies, Leipus, will be spared of the chores related to physical training. He is more likely to be dealing with injuries with Roux concentrating on training and suggesting ways to prevent injuries. Their job does not appear to be very complex to understand, but the two will have plenty of work together to handle the `shoulder to toe' problems of the players.

The Karnataka players - Srinath, Kumble and Dravid - have undergone surgery or advanced therapy to treat their shoulders. Venkatsai Laxman was operated in Australia to correct his wobbly knee. A heavy work load in his first year in international cricket took toll of Zaheer Khan's shin and hamstring. The theme of the tour for Leipus and Le Roux will be to keep the players match fit throughout the series.
