Nepalese Speaker escapes bid on life

KATHMANDU MARCH 13. The Speaker of Nepal's parliament escaped a bid on his life today but five of his security personnel were killed and eight others injured when the truck they were travelling in hit a landmine planted by Maoist rebels, officials said.

The vehicle was coming from Barhabise towards Kathmandu to escort the Speaker who was heading towards Barhabise, 120 km east of Kathmandu, to attend a school function. The Speaker was accompanied by the Minister of State for Health, Mohan Bahadur Basnet. Both Ranabhat and Mr. Basnet were safe, officials said.

The Maoists planted an underground bomb targeted against the Speaker, Mr. Ranabhat, who might have fallen prey to it had the escort van of the police not run over it, official sources said. — PTI
