Letters to the Editor
Sir, I was travelling by the Charminar Express from Secunderabad to Chennai on February 12. The train was detained at Chirala station due to a major derailment at Kavali, near Nellore, which affected both the up and down lines. Several important trains were delayed at Ongole, Chirala, Tenali and Vijayawada. The administration could neither provide proper information on the nature of the accident nor make alternative arrangements for the stranded passengers. The track restoration took more than 36 hours. The cancellation of trains has become a simple matter for the Railways. No doubt they refund the ticket fare but they do not seem concerned about the difficulties caused to the passengers. If passengers cancel their journey, the Railways collects penalties. Similar penalties should be imposed on the Railways too if trains are delayed or cancelled.
K.S.V. Raghavan,
