Trupti qualifies for French Open

BANGALORE. MARCH 15. India's Trupti Murgunde today qualified for the women's singles main draw of the French Open badminton championship in Paris.

The National runner-up, Trupti defeated Nawrath of Germany 7-1, 7-1, 7-1 in the final qualifying round. Earlier, Trupti prevailed over Wenny of France 6-8, 7-2, 7-5, 7-4 and Vaisanen, also of France, 2-7, 1-7, 7-1, 7-1, 7-1.

The other Indian girl, Shruti Kurien, however, went down fighting to Lelong of France 7-4, 7-2, 4-7, 4-7, 4-7.

In the men's section, Arvind Bhat did well to make the final qualifying round, but failed to capitalise on a head start and lost to I. Maywald of Germany 7-1, 7-5, 6-7, 3-7, 5-7. Earlier, Bhat defeated Oliver Fossy (France) 7-1, 5-7, 7-5, 7-0 and Vasconcelos (France) 7-4, 1-7, 4-7, 7-2, 7-4.

Nimish Goel made his exit from the qualifying rounds bowing to Kwanae (Japan) 3-7, 4-7, 4-7, so also B.S. Vidydhar losing to Russian Zhobov 3-7, 3-7, 6-8 after he had registered a 6-8, 7-2, 8-6, 7-3 win over Jordan of New Zealand.

The Indians who have direct entries in the main draw are defending champion Abhinn Shyam Gupta and National women's champion Aparna Popat.
