INDIAN WELLS, MARCH 15. Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt beat unseeded American Jan-Michael Gambill 6-2, 6-4 to cruise into the quarterfinals of the $2.95 million tennis Masters Series tournament here on Thursday. Pete Sampras struggled past unseeded French veteran Fabrice Santoro 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Hewitt next plays Sweden's Thomas Enqvist, who beat Switzerland's Roger Federer 6-4, 6-3. Ninth seeded Briton Tim Henman advanced with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 victory over seventh seed Marat Safin of Russia. In the women's singles Slovakian teenager Daniela Hantuchova ensured her first WTA tour final defeating unseeded Swiss Emanuelle Gagliardi 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. She faces Martina Hingis who beat Monica Seles 6-3, 6-2.
Bhupathi pair bows out
Mahesh Bhupathi and Jan-Michael Gambill (U.S.) went down 6-7 (4-7), 2-6 to the fifth-seeded Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe in the doubles pre-quarterfinals.
