AICF's website launched

CHENNAI, MARCH 15. The official website of the All India Chess Federation (chessindia.org) was launched on Friday by the President, N. Srinivasan in the presence of the important functionaries of the federation and the media.

Lauding the effort, as meeting the hopes and aspirations of the chess fraternity in the country, Mr. Srinivasan noted that the website could not have been launched at a better time than now when a spate of tournaments was being organised at all levels. Pointing out to the growing popularity of chess, the AICF President said, apart from tracing the history of chess and results of important competitions, the federation officials would strive to update information for the benefit of the surfers.

Mr. P.T. Ummer Koya, Secretary, AICF, explained the hours of labour put in to prepare the content, now projected as 281 pages. ``The aim is to touch 1000 pages,'' Mr. Koya added. He also listed some of the important events that India would be hosting in the coming years, which included the World Juniors in 2003, World Youth in 2004, and the Olympiad. Mr. Koya particularly, emphasised on the World Cup to be hosted in Hyderabad from October 9 to 21 this year. Interestingly, the event has the full backing of the Andhra Pradesh Government and the Chief Minister, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu, who had already sanctioned Rs. 25 lakhs. Mr. Koya hoped that chess would be part of the next National Games at Hyderabad and also the Asiad in 2006.

Mr. D.V. Sundar, Vice-President, AICF, welcomed the gathering.
