Protests in J&K

SRINAGAR MARCH 15. Normal life was affected during the day-long general strike called by the Jammu and Kashmir Students Union in protest against the alleged ``blasphemous'' remarks of the BJP MP, Vinay Katiyar, on the holy relic of Prophet Mohammad at the Hazratbal shrine here.

Police fired dozens of teargas shells and resorted to repeated lathicharge to disperse a mob shouting ``anti-India'' slogans at Nowhatta in downtown city and Maisuma near here. Reports of demonstrations also came in from Batmaloo, Karan Nagar, Kani Kadal, Nowpora, Choti Bazar and Sarai Bala. Some vehicles were damaged by the demonstrators.
