while those with minor injuries were treated at the primary health centre at Kovur, Satyavati was rushed to the Headquarters Hospital, Nellore. The other two left for their destinations after treatment.

The district officials including the District Collector, G. Anantha Ramu, immediately arranged for relief.

However a number of passengers, mostly bound for Chennai, chose whatever transport was available and left the place immediately since the accident spot was on the national highway. The RTC and private operators mobilised the maximum number of vehicles to clear the passengers.

Our Special Correspondent writes from Chennai:

According to reports received here, the first 11 coaches, which were on the track, later left for Chennai.

Following the accident, traffic on the Chennai - Vijayawada section was affected for more than five hours. Traffic was restored in one of the two lines by 5.30 p.m. Owing to this, trains including the Chennai-New Delhi G.T.Express, and the Hyderabad Express, scheduled to leave from Chennai Central this evening, were delayed by about two hours.
