Hyderabad, capital Andhra Pradesh, was founded by the Qutb Shahi sultans of Golconda, under whom the kingdom of Golconda attained a position of importance second only to that of the Mughal Empire in the north. The old fortress town of Golconda had proved inadequate as the kingdom's capital, and so in 1591 Muhammad Quli Qutb Shahi built a new city called Hyderabad on the east bank of the Musi river, a few miles from old Golconda. It became the capital of the Nizams of Hyderabad from 1724. About the ground: The Fateh Maiden Ground has been in existance since the 1920s and first-class cricket has been played here since 1934, over 130 matches. The ground was subsequently named as Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium when it was constructed in the year 1960. The venue hosted its first international when the home team played a Test match against New Zealand in 1955. The first one-dayer to be played here was between India and Pakistan on 11-9-1983. This ground was among the first in the country to acquire flood-lights. In all the venue has hosted three Test matches and 12 LOI matches, including two World Cup matches in 1987 and 1996. The records: India has played six matches here - won four, lost one and one no-result. Zimbabwe has played three (two against West Indies and one against New Zealand) at this venue and lost all. Highest team scores: 376-2 (50 overs) by India v New Zealand, 8-11-1999 (the second highest score ever registered in LOIs); 261-7 (50 overs) by South Africa v India, 17-10-1996. Best for Zimbabwe: 239 (49.4 overs) v New Zealand, 10-10-1987. Lowest team scores: 99 (36.3 overs) by Zimbabwe v West Indies, 21-11-1993.
