Pathan rips through Central

RAJKOT, MARCH 15. Baroda paceman Irfan Pathan (Jr) helped West Zone record a convincing 161-run victory over Central on the last day of the Duleep Trophy league match here today. Pathan's figures read 19-5-72-6.

After West declared its second innings at the overnight score of 213 for two, Pathan, along with leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule (three for 67), dismissed Central for 227.

Central, chasing 389 for an improbable win, was never in the hunt against the accurate Pathan and Bahutule. Ramesh Powar, the West off-spinner, chipped in with the prize wicket of Central skipper Gagan Khoda who made 56.

Despite a fighting unbeaten 115 off 162 balls by middleorder batsman Jaiprakash Yadav, Central could not be saved from defeat.

The first Central batsman to go was Jyoti Yadav, bowled by Pathan for five. The No. 3 batsman, T.P. Singh, did not last long and was dismissed in identical fashion by Pathan. Bahutule, from the other end, sent back Yere Goud (14) and Raja Ali (7) in quick succession to reduce Central to 60 for four.

However, Khoda (56, 4x4, 3x6) and Yadav (115, 17x4 1x6) added 62 runs for the fifth wicket but Khoda's exit triggered yet another collapse as Rohit Jalani (6), Kulamani Parida (1), Harvinder Singh (12), Salabh Srivastava (0) and Narendra Hirwani (0) followed without major contributions, leaving Jaiprakash unconquered.
