BANGALORE, MARCH 15. In any competition there has to be a winner and a loser and when the margin of victory is just a single point it can be heart wrenching for the loser. The National equestrian vhampionship show jumping event was one such contest where one cannot help but salute the winner and commiserate with the loser. Maj. Sandeep Dewan of the Assam Rifles astride Master clinched victory by a solitary point and for Danny Switters astride On The Edge it was just bad luck. The show jumping event attracted seven contestants but after the first round it was whittled down to just two qualifiers for the second round. Danny Swittens a 22-year-old final B. Com Student from Pune did extremely well to take the lead after the first round. His mount On The Edge responded well to his commands and cleared the obstacles with ease. Danny ended up with 43 penalty points to establish a decisive lead. Sandeep Dewan, already a probable for the Asian Games at Pusan, however, fared comparitively badly in the first round. Master, his horse was quite underprepared and often recalcitrant while negotiating the barriers. ``I am stationed on the Chinese border in Arunachal and it takes 10 days for my horse to walk to the post,'' Sandeep said afterwards. ``With the weather also extremely different, with the heat here reaching soaring heights, Master was not fully prepared. However the second round saw an improved performance and I am glad we pulled through by the narrowest of margins,'' Sandeep said. For the record Danny lost his contest on the last barrier dropping a balli and losing crucial points. Had Danny cleared the hurdle there might have been a jump-off after a tie. The tent pegging event also saw a turnabout after the first session. Lt. Col. Raj Purohit and Maj. Jyoti Dhawan led after the first session but in the afternoon round it was Hav. Jitendar Singh of ASC&C on Nisha who stole the limelight. Picking up the pegs with unnerving accuracy and precision Jitendar Singh sailed to the top spot to win from his Armymate Santosh Singh astride Maharani. The riders from Army Supply Corps Centre & College also bagged honours winning the show jumping medium top score event. Risaldar Hem Raj, posted at the host centre for the past two years, gave a dazzling display astride Rambo to log 530 points on the points per barrier jumps. Rambo proved invincible responding well to Hem Raj's guidance sailing over the barriers with effortless grace. Constable Radhey Shyam of Delhi Police fared well to finish second astride Tarzan.
