Ceat institutes more awards

MUMBAI, MARCH 15. The Ceat cricket awards will have a longer list of winners from the year 2000-2001. The Mumbai-based corporate has decided to institute a `lifetime achievement' category award, special prizes for best batsman, bowler and fielder, winning performance awards and select prizes for the best among the current lot of umpires, coaches and separate awards for sports journalists in print and television media. The company has also decided to introduce a public related award wherein the followers of the game have been asked to nominate their favourite cricketer.

Last year's (May 2000-April 2001) main winners are the South African national team and Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. Since South Africa is playing at home against Australia, the United Cricket Board (UCB) proposed fast bowler Mfuneko Ngam to represent the team and receive the prize in Mumbai on March 23.

But according to Mr. Sumedh Shah of Professional Management Group (PMG) a request was made to the UCB to nominate an experienced player. Ngam burst onto the international scene in 2000 against New Zealand and made an impact by the speed he was able to generate. He was seen as a successor to Alan Donald before injuries laid him low.

``The UCB has decided to send Mr. Denis Lindsay, who was the Match Referee for the home series between India and England,'' said Mr. Shah.

South Africa will receive Rs. 10 lakhs, while Muralitharan will receive Rs. 5 lakhs. The Sri Lankan off-spinner is likely to win the award for 2001-2002, too. This will become clear by April end. Ceat will also award a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh each to Muralitharan (best bowler), Marvan Atapattu (best batsman) and Mark Waugh (best fielder).

V.V.S. Laxman, for his match winning 281 against Australia at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, will receive the `winning performance' award.

Ceat has chosen Sunil Gavaskar for the `lifetime achievement' award. A panel headed by former BCCI President Raj Singh Dungarpur will decide the winners in the other four categories for umpires, coaches, sports journalists (print) and sports journalists (TV).
