Award for Indian scientist

LONDON MARCH 16. A.D. Karve, a scientist heading a Pune-based NGO, has won a £30,000 international award for discovering and implementing a unique technology that produces clean fuel from sugarcane waste.

Dr. Karve was chosen from among four finalists from all over the world.

``The project converts a large-scale environmental problem — burning of millions of tonnes of sugarcane waste in open fields each year — into a huge income-generating opportunity and providing clean and cheap domestic fuel,'' the citation said. Dr. Karve, who heads the Appropriate Rural Technology Institute (ARTI), said: ``The technology selected for this programme is relevant to many developing countries."

The Ashden Trust, sponsor of the award, has been funding environmental and sustainable development projects both in the U.K. and in the developing world for the last 10 years. — PTI
