Letters to the Editor
Sir, The appointed day has passed off peacefully with no untoward incident and the rest of the nation heaved a sigh of relief. The Government has implemented the conditions laid down by the apex court. The receiving of the shila by the Prime Minister's emissary is a clever move to assuage the feelings of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The Government by its mature handling of the situation has saved the VHP's image. Atal Behari Vajpayee has once again proved that he is more a statesman than a politician. S. Thiyagarajan, Pondicherry Sir, All said and done, the Ayodhya episode has passed off peacefully. Let us hope that this will pave the way for a peaceful settlement. For this to have happened, the entire credit should go to Atal Behari Vajpayee. He was under tremendous pressure from two main forces, one from his own group and the other from his coalition partners. He also had to consider the terrible repercussions if something went wrong. It is one thing to sit in judgment over what the course of action should be and it is another when the buck stops with you. In these circumstances, a minor harmless compromise is not unjustified. C. Shankar, Bangalore
