Protection from VHP

Sir, — Part of the BJP's destiny is surely to save Hinduism from the VHP. When are we going to understand that nobody needs to protect one of the oldest and greatest religions of the world?

If every Hindu follows his/her dharma, Hinduism will take care of itself. We empower our faiths by following it, not fighting phantom battles for it.

Or do we need a few stones or a pillar or a puny flame to safeguard our false pride? Are we going to stand by and watch the majesty of our country's philosophy brought low? I wish the sants visit the shrines of Lord Ram in south India.

They probably believe that he is seen only in a diminished form in these places and will appear in full splendour only in Ayodhya (which in any case he gave up). How tragic that the energies of a billion people have been focussed on this incident instead of attending to the starvation, illiteracy and ill-health of our countrymen.

Mini Krishnan,

Chennai

Sir, — Never before have we seen sants acting and speaking like politicians. They are highly respected in our country but the views and actions of Ramchandradas Paramhans are contrary to that of a sant.

He refused to acknowledge the court verdict on the shila daan in the first instance and vowed to perform puja at the disputed site, but changed his mind for unknown reasons.

Secondly, he threatened to kill himself. Is he so weak in spirit that he has to resort to such steps?

S.S. Bajaj,

Agra, U.P.
