HC favours code for matrimonial advertising

NEW DELHI MARCH 18. In an attempt to save prospective brides from being duped by matrimonial advertisements that gave ``false and exaggerated'' claims about the grooms, the Delhi High Court today asked the Press Council of India (PCI) to discuss formulation of a code for such advertisements in consultation with various news organisations. ``We have to save unprotected girls from wolves in society. You (PCI and news organisations) have to examine if any law needs to be formulated in this regard,'' said S.N. Kapoor, judge, directing the PCI secretary, Reva Khetarpal, to discuss the matter with news organisations and file a reply within two weeks.

Apart from the PCI, the replies were sought by the court from the Editors' Guild, The Hindustan Times, The Statesman, The Indian Express, The Times of India, the Delhi State Legal Services and two news agencies by April 19. — PTI
