NEW DELHI, MARCH. 19. The Union Cabinet today decided to grant four per cent additional dearness allowance to Central Government employees and a similar increase in dearness relief for pensioners with effect from January 1. With this, the rate of dearness allowance and dearness relief would go up to 49 per cent. Announcing this, the Union Minister and Cabinet spokesperson, Pramod Mahajan, said the financial implications on account of the increases is estimated at Rs. 1,569 crores - Rs.1161 crore per year for dearness allowance and Rs. 408 crore for dearness relief. For the current financial year, the corresponding additional burden on the exchequer would be Rs. 1,831 crores - Rs.1,355 crores and Rs.476 crores, considering that it would cover a period of 14 months since the new rates come into effect from January. The Cabinet also decided to revise the senior scale and selection scale to primary schools teachers employed in schools run by the Central Government in Union Territories as also those operated by autonomous bodies sponsored by the Central Government. For the senior grade, the pay scale would now be Rs. 5,500-9,000 and for selection grade, Rs. 6,500-10,500. Presently, it is Rs. 5,000- 8,000 and Rs. 5,500-9,000. The new scales would be with retrospective effect from January 1, 1996.
