COLOMBO, MARCH 21. The ruling United National Party today swept the local Government polls, winning all but five of the councils to which elections were held. The Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, described the victory as a vote for the peace process that his Government put on the fast track after winning the December 2001 parliamentary election, and for its economic policies. The People's Alliance, which controlled most of the 222 councils for which elections were held, was defeated in 218. The radical nationalist-socialist, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, which notched up 16 seats in the 2001 parliamentary election, six more than in the previous one, saw its fortunes dip dramatically this time. Acceding to a request by Tamil parties, elections to local Government councils in the north-east have been postponed to September 25.
