West Bengal girls take team title
By V.V. Subrahmanyam

HYDERABAD, MARCH 21. The girls from West Bengal demonstrated what team work is all about by retaining the team title with a tally of 149.50 points in the 42nd senior National gymnastics championship which began at the Fateh Maidan Indoor Stadium here on Thursday. This they did under the threat of some freak mishap occurring performing as they were on Indian-made equipment.

Railways and Maharashtra with 145.85 and 120.55 points finished second and third respectively. The three teams finished in the same order as in the last edition.

What clinched the issue for West Bengal was the consistent performances in all the four events - vaulting horse, uneven bars, balancing beam and floor exercises, in that order. Though there was only score of 8-plus by Rakhi Debnath (8.30) in vaulting horse all the other scores were around seven. That was the decisive factor.

Rakhi topped the individual table with scores of 8.30, 7.95, 7.55 and 7.50 with teammates Chanchala Chakraborty (7.95, 7.95, 7.70, 7.35) and Juma Bag (7.45, 7.55, 7.40, 7.20) coming second and third. Having two World Championship participants - Chanchala and Rakhi - in its ranks proved to be major plus for West Bengal.

Railways, which began with a major handicap of key performer Pampa Dey having trouble in both knees, injured during practice session here, and an indisposed Lusi (but forced to compete), failed to realise its goal of emerging champion. This despite Sundari Mondal coming up with an impressive performance with scores of 8.40, 7.50, 7.90, 7.95.

She was one gymnast who made a sincere attempt to try complicated features in the floor exercises. The problem for Railways was that its other gymnasts were inconsistent. Chetana Chahal (8.40, 7.30, 7.20, 7.45) and Pampa Dey (7.35, 6.75, 6.75, 7.30) finished in that order. Pampa Dey delighted the sparse crowd performing the floor exercises to the tune of Indian classic music.

Maharashtra was a disappointing third though Mehata Lalitha (7.30, 7.65, 7.25, 6.55), Gohad Neha (7.65, 6.85, 5.60, 6.25), Ajgaonkar Arya (6.90, 5.35, 5.25, 4.75) joined the other top three qualifiers from the top two teams in this section to qualify for the final round.

The following are the final positions apparatus wise from the top three teams which would should give a fair hint of who can be the individual all-round champion:

Vaulting horse: Sundari Mondal 8.50, Chetana Chahal 8.40, Rakhi Debnath 8.30.

Uneven bars: Chanchala Chakraborty & Rakhi Debnath 7.95 points (tied), Mehata Lalitha 7.65, Sundari Mondal 7.55.

Balancing beam: Sundari Mondal 7.90, Chanchala Chakraborty 7.70, Rakhi Debnath 7.55.

Floor exercises: Sundari Mondal 7.95, Rakhi Debnath 7.50, Chetana Chahal 7.45.

At the end of the day most gymnasts were seen complaining about the uneven mats and the ``avoidable vibration in the balancing beam'' for the simple reason that imported equipment, which gymnasts from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are particularly used to, is missing here. This, the team officials say, is one of the reasons desisting the gymnasts from going all- out for the fear of a serious injury.
