Air Marshal's removal opposed

MUMBAI MARCH 23. The senior Akali Dal leader and Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, S.S. Dhindsa, has expressed strong reservation in the manner in which Air Marshal Manjit Singh Sekhon was asked to resign for his alleged hobnobbing with politicians, and demanded a probe into all aspects of political interference in military appointments and transfers.

"Itni jaldi jo karvai ki gayi...woh achcha nahi hua" (The haste in which he was removed was improper and not in good taste), Mr. Dhindsa said.

He said he had already taken up the matter with the Defence Minister, George Fernandes. "I told him there have been cases of lobbying for support in the past. So many parties have been doing it why single out Air Marshal Sekhon alone".

But the Akali Dal leader dismissed contentions that the Government could take action against the Air Marshal as the Akali Dal (Badal) party, with which he was allegedly close "no longer had numbers in the Lok Sabha to bring down the NDA coalition." — PTI
