Stray incidents in Gujarat

By Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD MARCH 23.Curfew has been extended to Gaekwad Haveli police station in the walled city area of Ahmedabad in addition to the four other police stations following some incidents of arson in Raikhad locality this evening.

The police said a mob set fire to some shops in Raikhad locality forcing the authorities to impose an indefinite curfew on areas under the Gaekwad Haveli police station. An indefinite curfew is already in force in Kalupur, Dariapur, Shahpur and Karanj police station areas covering almost the entire main markets for the last two days and was implemented strictly today without any relaxation.

The situation in most other parts of riot-torn Gujarat including Baroda, which witnessed violence on Friday in which four persons were killed in stabbing, remained incident-free.

While a few hours of curfew relaxation in Baroda passed off peacefully, indefinite curfew remained in force in Vadgam, Modasa, Himmatnagar, Godhra, the temple town of Shamlaji and several towns in Panchamahals district which witnessed stray incidents of stabbing and arson on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Congress leadership in the State has taken strong exception to the naming of one of its members of the Assembly, Farookh Sheikh, in a police FIR in connection with the arson in the Sindhi Bazaar locality on Thursday in which over 100 shops were gutted.
