Sulskis consolidates his lead
By Amitabha Das Sharma

KOLKATA, MARCH 23. Grand Master Sarunas Sulskis of Lithuania consolidated his position as the leader beating top-seeded Belarus GM Aleksei Aleksandrov in the seventh round of XIII Goodricke international Open chess tournament here at the Gorky Sadan on Saturday.

Having broken into the sole lead beating the Armenian GM Arsen Yegiazarian in the last round, Sulskis appeared undaunted with black pieces against the fancied top-seed and set himself clear from the rest of the field by one point. The Lithuanian GM now has six points.

Faced with Sluskis' Nimzo-Indian defence, Aleksandrov had two central connected pawns. Sulskis won both the pawns to break open Aleksandrov's kingside and developed his attack well from this point to force the latter resign in 40 moves.

Sasikiran frustrated

India's hope Grand Master Krishnan Sasikiran, playing with white pieces, failed to tame the Ukrainian GM Alexander Goloshchapov, who waged a dogged battle to frustrate the former's ploys in the day's longest duel that lasted till the 65th move. As is his wont, Sasikiran played a sharp game and in a Gurnfeld defence obtained a passed pawn in the centre. But Goloshchapov had an extra pawn as well as two pawns on the queenside.

The Indian GM brought his king over to the queenside to block the opponent's pawns. Goloshchapov extricated himself winning the central pawn in return for the two queenside pawns after which the game headed towards a draw.

The draw had Sasikiran tallying 5 points, which helped him retain his overnight second spot along side the Argentine GM Maxim Sorokin. Sorokin got some advantage initially from the opening against GM Pavel Kotsur of Kazakhstan in the open variation of Ruy Lopez. But Kotsur exchanged off the pieces and went into a rook ending and ensured a draw.

S. Satyapragyan of India held Russian GM Alexey Kuzmin to a draw in 21 moves in a Nimzo Indian defence. Kuzmin, despite having two bishops, accepted the draw-offer form Satyapragyan as the centre was blocked. This helped the Indian remain in the third spot netting 4.5 points with 11 others.

India's International Master Sandipan Chanda had little difficulty in getting the better of compatriot, WIM Swati Ghate, with the black pieces in a Sicilian defence. Swati lost a piece on the 26th move and resigned immediately.

GM norm aspirant, IM R.B. Ramesh of India, agreed to a quick draw in just nine moves playing against German IM Jeorg Blauert in a Petroff defence.
