Contradictions

Sir, — I sympathise with Harish Khare, if the Prime Minister has led him to believe that he ever was a ``liberal or moderate'' (March 20). Mr. Vajpayee has a more acute sense of discipline and sophistication to hide his real emotions than many of his BJP colleagues and swayamsevaks, who blurt out their hidden agenda at the drop of a coin. If Mr. Vajpayee wants to make India a nuclear power, it is also a part of that hidden agenda, and not for the reasons one hopes and logically expect. Countries do not become great nations by acquiring nuclear power. Our neighbour also has nuclear capabilities. At stake is the morality and credibility of this nation but unfortunately, we are failing in both.

Mr. Vajpayee made up his mind long ago and his priorities towards constitutional responsibilities are relevant only as long as the aims and manifestos of the BJP and other evil forces of communal divide make it possible. He is a bundle of contradictions and his actions are incompatible with the image he portrays for himself. Mr. Khare has said it all. The question now is what the NDA allies of the BJP are going to do. Do they have enough commonsense, pragmatism and sense of responsibility towards the nation to act once and for all?
