Spiritual classes off to low-key start

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI March 24. The State-sponsored spiritual classes in 63 Hindu shrines for school children on Sundays got off to a low-key start today.

The Ministers and officials kept off the inaugural, as temple priests taught Tamil hymns to a small gathering of students at various temples.

At the Kapaleeswarar shrine in Mylapore, where the ``Annadhanam'' scheme was launched by the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, yesterday, the oduvars gave a one-hour lesson on the life history of Saivite saint, Thirugnanasambandar.

But a handful of students from the temple-administered orphanage, Anbu Illam (called Karunai Illam during the erstwhile Karunanidhi regime) were brought in for the classes.

To draw a large gathering of students, the temple administration has planned a publicity campaign in the neighbouring schools. Pamphlets will be distributed in the local schools and teachers will be asked to send their wards to the classes, the Executive Officer, A. Subramaniam, said. To make the classes interesting, a panel of spiritual orators would be invited apart from the oduvars and sivachariars of the temple.

The Government had announced the ``Annadhanam'' scheme and the spiritual classes in 63 shrines in the recent Governor's address to the Assembly, drawing appreciation from the BJP, VHP and Hindu Munnani, and equal measure of flak from minorities' outfits.
