Sampras defeated Nieminen 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday to close a day on which the programme was swelled with matches postponed by Friday's rain.

The results:

Men's singles (second round): Pete Sampras bt Jarkko Nieminen 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; Marat Safin bt Mark Philippoussis 7-6 (7-4), 6-1; Lleyton Hewitt bt Paradorn Srichaphan 7-6 (7-3), 7-5; Juan Carlos Ferrero bt Todd Martin 4- 6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
