Second straight win for BMFC
By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 24. Bengal Mumbai Football Club (BMFC) defeated Border Security Force, Jalandhar 2-1 to notch up its second successive win in the second phase of the National Football League (NFL) second division at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Sunday.

BMFC, which had beaten Indian National Club 2-1 in its opening match on Friday, scored through its Nigerian recruits Chima Okorie and Adesinha Sadiq.

BSF made it 1-2 four minutes from close when BMFC's defender Kamal Thapa conceded a self-goal. It was the first loss for the Jalandhar side, which had beaten Haryana Audit and Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) earlier.

In another match, ASEB scored a 1-0 win over Haryana Audit. The decisive goal was managed by Kamakhya Basumatrey in the 58th minute. With this determined effort, the Assam team remained in contention for one of the two qualifying spots for the final phase.

ASEB has three points from as many matches while Haryana Audit is yet to open its tally after two defeats. Indian National, the fifth side in the fray, has three points from two matches.

Considering the performance of all the sides so far, BMFC managed an important win to strengthen its chances of moving into the next stage.

Though Chima and fellow-striker Sadiq were hardly given any room to operate for nearly 25 minutes in the first half, BMFC managed to take the lead due to a fine effort by Crispin Chettri and Sushil Karthak, combining well on the right flank. This 32nd-move initiated by Chettri, resulted in a penalty kick when his right-footer was stopped by Gurjit Singh with his hand. Chima converted the spot kick.

Twice, BSF came close to scoring. J. Ouseph's volley in the 19th minute struck the bar. After the half-time, BSF tested the rival defence again when Santosh Kujur executed a powerful flag-kick in the 67nd minute. BMFC's goalkeeper Anup Nag failed to clear the ball and it went straight to Dharminder Singh. But the striker pushed it over the bar.

BMFC not only survived the dangerous move but also stretched its lead in the 71st minute. Chettri gave a pass to Sadiq and the Nigerian got past BSF's goalkeeper Kameshwar Singh with ease.

For BSF, Kujur's continues efforts finally bore fruit. The stocky winger, moving in quickly from the centre, unleashed a strong left-footer. In an effort to clear the move, BMFC's Thapa deflected the ball in.
