Haryana subdues Orissa

DINDIGUL, MARCH 24. Orissa, which held the defending champion, Punjab to a goalless draw in one of the hardest fought matches on Sunday morning in Pool A league, gave high hopes of defeating Haryana in the last and Crucial tie in the evening to qualify for the Quarter-finals along with Punjab (four points) in the 28th All India Electricity Board Football Tournament being held here.

But it happened to be otherwise as Haryana, which lost badly to Punjab earlier, rose to the occasion with one of the finest displays and that too only with 10 men for the major part of the match (right stopper Mahipal Singh went out with a Red card in the 12th minute) to defeat Orissa 2-1 and qualify for the quarter-finals.

Both the teams were on the attack and in the 12th minute in a clash between Mahipal and Mondal of Orissa, Mahipal Singh manhandled Mondal and Mahipal was given marching orders by referee Jehangir. Though reduced to 10 men, Haryana attacked relentlessly and went ahead in the 28th minute with a goal by outside-left Sanjay. In the next three minutes Haryana scored again through outside-right Satheesh.

In the second session, Orissa went all out to reduce the margin but Haryana goalkeeper Kulwant Singh brought off many spectacular saves. However he was beaten in the 65th minute, when Mondal scored off a cross from Ghosh from the left.

Helped by a fine hat-trick by striker Xavier Kamalanathan, a brace by outside-left Prabhakaran and a goal by left wing back Arumugam, the host, Tamil Nadu trounced Utter Pradesh 6-1 for its second win and qualified for the quarter- finals. U.P also qualified for the quarter-finals with its win over A.P. Generator Corporation. The only goal for UP was scored by Striker Vasudevan.

In Pool C, Kerala Coasted to a 4-1 win over Madhya Pradesh for its second win and to top the Pool. R. S. Ramesh (2), Taseer Kanth and Robinson scored for Kerala and Stephen scored for MP. However Kerala and MP qualified for the quarter-finals from this pool.

In Pool D, last year's runner-up, West Bengal did not turn up and so the other two teams, Delhi and Karnataka, which were involved in a goalless draw earlier, automatically, qualified for the quarter-finals. Draw of lots decided the first team of the Pool, and that was Karnataka. The line up of the quarter-finals will be: Punjab Vs MP; Tamil Nadu Vs Delhi; Kerala Vs Haryana; Karnataka Vs UP.
