Letters to the Editor
Sir, The communal riots in Gujarat clearly show that the rancour and bitterness created among the Hindus and Muslims by the Partition of the country remain unabated. India, even after its vivisection, continues to be multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-lingual. But it has been retarded by linguistic chauvinism and communal animosity. The Ayodhya problem has added fuel to the fire. It is evident that outfits such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal do not remember the basic tenets of Hinduism viz., tolerance and forbearance. In a democracy, the majority has no right to persecute the minorities as the protection of their interests is its salutary and cardinal principle.
