Treating TB

Sir, — It is quite shocking that as many as 102 different drug regimens are being followed by a group of 187 private practitioners in treating Tuberculosis (``TB control in India,'' March 14). It is important to correct this by introducing standard treatment regimens, along the lines being

followed by the doctors in the Government sector to control TB as per the guidelines of the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP).

The main aim of RNTCP is to implement steps for reversing TB and educating private doctors. They are, for instance, encouraged to depend on sputum smear examinations for quality diagnosis.

The Government of India has accorded topmost priority to RNTCP. If the message and mode of operations in the field do not reach private practitioners, the Centre will fail in its own goal of keeping its political and administrative commitment.

E. Subbaraiyan,
Villupuram, T.N.
