Dressed-up TADA

Sir,— I agree with the opinion expressed in ``POTO ratification will be a setback to civil liberties'' (March 25).

In the recent ruling in the Gurmail Singh case, a Division Bench of the Supreme Court held that TADA was a ``drastic piece of legislation'' and a ``serious in-road in the liberty of an individual''.

What is POTO but a dressed-up TADA?

Also there is no need for the Government to misuse POTO as it accused the Congress of doing with TADA. A mere application of the legislation is in itself a ``serious in-road in the liberty of an individual''.

Arming police with more powers than they currently wield as POTO envisages is a dangerous move. Do the police in any part of the country have a track record of partisan-free and just behaviour?

D. Pramod,
Chennai
