Involve labour in mine safety: Sharad Yadav

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MARCH 28. The Union Labour Minister, Sharad Yadav, has called for a coherent National Policy on Occupational Safety while the Vice-President, Krishan Kant, favours a proactive engagement of labour and local population in promoting mine safety.

Speaking at a function organised to present the National Safety Awards (mines) for the year 2000, Mr. Kant said the concept of industrial safety may have to be expanded from being management or Government-centric to that of active participation of workers. The participation of workers in safety management of mines should be the key factor in fostering teamwork, good communication between the management and the miners in preventing accidents.

Stating that there was no reason for miners to risk their lives when mechanised substitutes were available for hazardous mining operations, he referred to the advances in technology and said it was quite possible to make mines and mining safe.
