Christian groups' plea to PM

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI MARCH 28. The Global Council of Indian Christians and the National Council of Churches have urged the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, to remove the `Gujarat stigma' on India's secular image by dealing `strongly' with any ideology that was antithetical to equality and justice.

In a joint statement, they congratulated the Prime Minister for his stern warning to `neo-Hindutva' groups indulging in minority-bashing.

``Our hearts are saddened by the continued diktats and codes of conduct given to minorities by the RSS ideologues.''

``We would like to invite the Prime Minister's urgent attention and express concern over the growing trend of intolerance in our society,'' they said.

The minorities had maintained the highest level of self-restraint in spite of the ``constant provocations and insidious remarks by the Sangh Parivar leadership,'' they added.
