Without any discussion, the Bill, moved by the Finance Minister, C. Ponnaiyan, was passed for the Government to immediately withdraw funds particularly for payment of salaries to its 12.5 lakh staff. A day after presenting the budget 2002-2003, the Minister also presented the final supplementary demands for grants of Rs. 978.20 crores for the current fiscal year ending March 31. The supplementary funds sought were for Rs. 49 crores to provide flood relief in the delta districts and Rs. 261.41 crores for additional expenditure on payment of interest on various borrowings by the Government, besides Rs. 448.32 crores for repayment of the ways and means advances fund overdraft obtained from the Reserve Bank. (The cash-strapped Government availed itself of overdraft facilities from the RBI for the sixth successive day yesterday.) The budget debate would begin next Monday and the Minister is scheduled to give his reply on Friday. The session ends on May 25.
