Malik on fast in jail

SRINAGAR MARCH 29. Supporters of the arrested Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief, Yasin Malik, fought a pitched battle with police today, demanding his immediate release.

A JKLF spokesman, in a statement, said Mr. Malik, a heart patient, had not taken any food after his arrest on March 25.

Police burst teargas shells to disperse Mr. Malik's supporters who took to the streets at Maisuma near here immediately after Friday prayers.

Shopkeepers downed their shutters at Maisuma, Red Cross Road, Exchange Road, Gaw Kadal, Madina Chowk and adjoining areas. The JKLF chief was arrested from the All-Party Hurriyat Conference headquarters while addressing mediapersons.
