Negi, Manogna stage upsets

TEHERAN MARCH 30. India's Parimarjan Negi and M. Manogna contributed to the first-round upsets in the under-10 category of the Asian Youth Chess Championship by scalping their second-seeded opponents in their respective sections here on Friday.

The competition in four age-groups, separately for boys and girls, saw India gain a psychological edge over the host. Most of the Indians scored over their Iranian rivals.

Delhi-boy Negi, seeded 15, accounted for Turkmenistan's Kurban Amanmoradov while G. Madhukar and Abhishek Kelkar overcame Iranian challengers. However, Y. Sandeep lost to Kyrgystan's Mars Ulu Dan. UAE's 14th seed, Ishag Saeed, upstaged top seed E. Abiraad of Lebanon.

In the boys' under-12 category, another Delhi-lad Sankalp Modwal made his presence felt by holding third seed A. A. Khouri of United Arab Emirates. Top seed Vijay Keerthi and ninth seed M. Gopikrishna won their matches. But second seed D. Sai Srinivas had to settle for a draw with 13th seed A. Ulu Kozubay.

G. Rohit, Abhijit Gupta, Nikhilesh Kumar and V. Subhashi, seeded one to four, opened their campaigns with victories in the under-14 section. In the under-16 category, top seed Deepan Chakkravarthy and fourth seed Saptarshi Roy won as expected while the surprise came in the form of Himanshu Kumar's triumph over fifth seeded Iranian S. A. Akbarinia.

Among the girls, too, there were encouraging results from the Indians. Manogna stunned second-seeded Mongolian Keysar Bauyrijan while P. L. Sahiti overpowered third-seeded Uzbek Albina Baybikova.

Under-12: K. Vijay Keerthi bt Mohammad Khademi (Ira); A. Ulu Kozubay (Kyr) drew with D. Sai Srinivas; A. A. Khouri (UAE) drew with Sankalp Modwal; M. Gopikrishna bt H. Torbey (Leb).

Under-14: G. Rohit bt R. Elibaba (Leb); Abhijit Gupta bt E. Ghanbari (Ira); K. Nikhilesh Kumar bt K. D. Jayasinghe (Sri); A. Khajavi (Ira) lost to V. Subhashi; V. Ninth (Vie) drew with Akshayraj Kore; O. Noroozi (Ira) bt Namra Pandya; T. R. Shanmuganathan drew with B. Davlyatshin (Uzb).

Under-16: Deepan Chakkravarthy bt E. Ahmadinia (Ira); V. Khalesi (Ira) lost to Saptarshi Roy; S. A. Akbarinia (Ira) lost to Himanshu Kumar.

Girls: Under-10: M. Manogna bt Keysar Bauyrijan (Mon); P. L. Sahiti bt Albina Baybekova (Uzb); G. Madanasri drew with S. V. Sathyapriya.

Under-12: D. Harika bt Dhara Gupta; Anjana Sowjanya bt M. Jallout (Leb); T. Koswatte (Sri) lost to Kajri Choksi; Dhayani Dave lost to Ngoc Pham Bich (Vie); Irina Gevorgyan (Ozb) drew with V. K. Sindhu.

Under-14: Z. Sharofidinova (Tjk) lost to Kruttika Nadig; M. Rajadarshini drew with S. Tajik (Ira); M. Teymoori (Ira) lost to Saheli Nath.

Under-16: Anet Azadkhanian (Ira) drew with Tania Sachdev; Eesha Karavade lost to Vera Daljenkova (Ozb); N. Vinuthna bt Elham Shirvani (Ira).
