Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf's appeal to India to de-escalate and move the Army from the borders is rather premature. He seems to forget that the army was deployed in response to the `morally' supported Islamic terrorists' attack on the Indian Parliament on December 13. The lull in Kashmir violence seems more due to winter than any change in Pakistani policy. It would be better if India adopts a wait-and-watch attitude to see if terrorist activity in Kashmir diminishes in summer and hopefully stops during the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Whether we like it or not, Gen. Musharraf is here to stay for the next five years and maybe more. India should definitely engage him but this can wait for another six months. Meanwhile, as he rightly said, both sides should refrain from indulging in "petty" media statements damaging each other.
