Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Time running out

Sir, — The preamble to the text of the interview Malini Parthasarathy had with the Pakistan President is so concise that it reflects the fact that the chill that has set in since December 13 has in fact affected both the nations, whether one acknowledges the fact or not, the role of intermediary being actually performed by the U.S.

The next noteworthy fact is that with all talk of the Shimla Pact and the Lahore Declaration, what matters is to pick up the threads from the latest talks at Agra. Time is running out in the prevalent non-productive exercise, as per the General who is more specific in his discussion and who finds the historical back up for every query. Moreover, whether one appreciates the nature of the ruling system of Pakistan or not, it will be in the interest of India to pave the way for dialogue in consideration of the fact that but for Gen. Musharraf, no other leader of that country would have had the courage to address the people of Pakistan on January 12 in explicit terms about the concerns of India as well as the international community besides the crucial reformatory measures, much to the discomfort of the fundamentalists at home.

Syed Gowher Ali,
Chennai
