Letters to the Editor
Sir, That a young couple could be attacked and brutally killed by a mob just because they are Muslims and that such atrocities have been perpetrated several times over during the Gujarat riots (March 31) show how religious labels are being misused and cheapened in this "spiritual'' land. The immediate provocation for this incident seems to have been that the woman was a convert to Islam. The Constitution was framed by people who saw the need to protect people from bigotry and to conserve and develop traditions of amicable living which have made India what it is, and Hinduism what it is. The past several decades have certainly seen a genuine mingling and understanding among communities, as otherwise there would have been no India at all, and the only form of Hinduism left would have been the kind that resulted in assassinating Gandhi, murdering Staines, and killing Mumtaz Bano the other day. It is time people of the majority community spoke out to protect those traditions of amicable living.
Vasantha Surya,
