NEW DELHI APRIL 3. The Congress has once again urged the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, who is visiting Gujarat tomorrow, to remove the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, from the post. In a change of tack, the party spokesperson, Jaipal Reddy, eschewed his usual combativeness and appealed to the Prime Minister to "live up to his image, and to the expectations.'' This is one way of rehabilitating the image of Gujarat and the honour of the country in the comity of nations,'' he said. The Congress sought to put the onus on the Prime Minister saying that after the "damning indictment of Mr. Modi and his Government'' by the National Human Rights Commission, any attempt to shield him would reflect poorly on Mr. Vajpayee. "The moral trial of Mr. Modi is over, but Mr. Vajpayee's begins with the start of his Gujarat trip'' said Mr Reddy. He said that though the NHRC report was not legally binding, it was morally binding. "It is tantamount to the pointed indictment of the Gujarat Government,'' he said. The Prime Minister's visit had given rise to expectations and now it was up to Mr. Vajpayee to live up to those expectations.'' As a responsible Opposition party, we hope the Prime Minister will not fail the nation,'' Mr. Reddy said.
