Rhodes propels Proteas to 267

DURBAN APRIL 3. Jonty Rhodes' 76 and a late assault by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher took South Africa to a fighting 267 for six in 50 overs in the fifth one-day International at Kingsmead on Wednesday.

Even Shane Warne, returning to the Australian side after injury, could not stop the host from reaching this total though he was the best bowler on view, taking two for 44 from his quota of 10 overs.

After Greame Smith and Herschelle Gibbs began in aggressive fashion, a tempo sustained by pinch-hitter Nicky Boje who made 22 off 22 balls with three fours, South Africa seemed to have lost its momentum and direction in the middle of the innings.

When Jacques Kallis was caught on the long-leg boundary by Jimmy Maher off Glenn McGrath, the Proteas were at a wobbly 125 for four.

But Ponting's Aussies were pegged back by the aggressive and innovative Rhodes who smashed his way to 76 off 70 balls with nine fours.

In the slog overs, Rhodes was given company by Boucher who made an unbeaten 41 in just 42 deliveries, four of which he dispatched to the fence.
