The big win was of little consequence as it hardly disturbed the top order in the 12-team league table with the tournament almost nearing its conclusion. The defending champion, having receeded far behind in the race for the title this season, only had the consolation of progressing into the top half of the 12-team league table, with this win. East Bengal tallied 29 points from 19 matches to replace Mahindra United (27 points) in the sixth position, while Agragami remained in the ninth spot with 20 points. East Bengal also retained the winning record against Agragami having downed the latter 2-1 in the first phase of the two-tier tournament. With injuries dogging key Agragami players, East Bengal found it all too easy against a weak opponent and fired in three goals in the first session itself. The first goal came up in the 28th minute as East Bengal's Nigerian striker Omolaja Olalekan, slotted in a cross from Bijen Singh, with a spectacular side-volley. Bijen Singh, made to play more in the mid-field, scored two minutes later as he made space for himself and finished with a greater finesse. East Bengal's Brazilian recruit, Jose Carlos, who did much of the spadework in an all-round role to keep the opponent always under pressure, secured the third goal in the 38th minute. Going into the second session, with the comfortable lead of 3-0, East Bengal continued on the attacking mode. Dipankar Roy, utilised his fiery runs on the flanks to a good measure and found the mark in the 55th minute as he finished a Bijen Singh cross with a left-footed drive. Roy was at it again in the next minute and availed a defensive lapse in the opponent ranks to slot his team's fifth goal. Agragami pulled one back in the 58th minute getting Moses Owira head home a corner taken by Sasthi Duley. There was more action in the 75th minute when East Bengal stopper-back, Dipak Mondal, handled a goal-bound ball and received marching orders from Delhi referee Ravishankar. The resultant penalty, however, was missed as Sasthi Duley sent the ball wide while taking the attempt for Agragami. The scoreline remained unaltered for the rest of the match. Our Sports Reporter
