Prasad, Badani lead South's fightback

BANGALORE April 3. A cautious skipper and a flamboyant southpaw helped South Zone make an earnest bid for first innings honours. M.S.K. Prasad (93 not out) and Hemang Badani (65 retd. hurt) guided South to 243 for two after East Zone was all out for at 398 on the second day of the Duleep Trophy match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday.

South is 155 runs adrift off the East score. The host wrested the initiative after East dominated the opening day though Hemang Badani's backspasm which forced him to leave the field, remains an area of concern.

Earlier, a run out triggered East's slump from the overnight 341 for five. Rajeev Kumar Raja tested Watekar's arm at point and found his stumps in disarray. Raja's partner — Zakaria Zufri — had twin reprieves on 22 as Watekar's at point and Sriram's at mid-off grassed him much to the dismay of seamer M.R. Shrinivas. However, Zufri became Ganesh's lone wicket and East mustered 57 runs as the tail did not last long.

South progressed well despite the early dismissals of its two in form batsmen — Sriram and Vinay Kumar. Prasad (93 not out, 183b, 12x4, 2x6) offered a broad bat to the seamers Mark Ingti and L.R. Shukla.

Runs started flowing with Badani's arrival. The southpaw shrugged off memories of his inability to guide India to a one-day series victory against Nasser Hussain's men. A Parag Das over went for 19 runs with a square drive, short-arm pull and a whip past mid-wicket garlanding Badani's efforts. He also broke through the shackles imposed by Utpal Chatterjee, sweeping the veteran spinner for four.

Badani cruised to 50 in just 40 deliveries and his belligerence perhaps inspired Prasad to hoist off-spinner Lahiri past long-on. The alarm bells however rang when Badani (65 retd. hurt, 61b, 10x4, 2x6) clutched his back and rested on the turf seconds before Mark Ingty started his run-up. The southpaw returned to the dressing room with back spasm.

Prasad found an ally in Vijay Bharadwaj and the duo held firm until close to shoulder the South hopes into the third day.

The East bowlers held no threats and South can bag first innings honours if its batsmen temper their aggression with caution on a featherbed pitch.
