Arjun Singh in ominous form

By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI APRIL 3. PGA champion Arjun Singh made his way up with a smashing 7 and 6 victory over Indrajit Bhalotia, and cruised into the pre-quarterfinals of the Rs. 10 lakh SRF all-India matchplay championship at the Delhi Golf Club course here on Wednesday.

The big names joining Arjun Singh in the last 16 were two-time PGA champion Uttam Singh Mundy and Amandeep Johl, on a day when four seeded players made their exit.

The defeats of second-seeded Mukesh Kumar and third-seeded Feroz Ali were the upsets of the second day. Amandeep Johl beat Mukesh one up, while Dinesh Raghuvanshi edged Feroze two up.

Arjun Singh's only blemish came on the par-4 second hole when he got into the bushes. He double-bogeyed the hole, but from then he steadily improved his play and finished the contest with six holes remaining. Arjun led 6-0 after the 11th hole and then came up with a birdie on the par-3 12th hole.

After playing a nail-biting first round against Ashok Kumar on Tuesday, there was no respite for the sixth-seeded Uttam Singh Mundy. Gursimran Sethi gave Mundy a good chase. Mundy had opened a slender one-hole lead on the turn, but Sethi squared scores by winning the 10th hole.

Sethi's downfall started on the 12th as he struggled to cope with the tree-lined fairways. Mundy won the 12th, 14th and 16th to eventually win with a comfortable margin of three and two.

In the bottom half of the draw, Amandeep Johl thrice surrendered his lead before he made an eagle on the par-5 18th to knock out Mukesh Kumar.

Johl won the first but Mukesh squared things by winning the third. Mukesh birdied the par-3 fifth to go ahead, but that was the only time the man from Mhow led during the day. It was a see-saw battle after that and as they entered the 18th, there was excitement among the small band of supporters who had kept track of the progressThe results:
