BASKETBALL: WASHINGTON: A day after his worst scoring game ever, Michael Jordan woke up with a swollen right knee and decided enough was enough. Jordan was placed on the injured list on Wednesday by the Washington Wizards, and he said he is done for the season. ``I think it is best at this point to rest the knee and let it heal properly,'' Jordan said in a statement. ``I tried to get back and play as soon as possible and, early on, the knee responded well. But after the swelling this morning, I think it's best to give it rest.'' Jordan ends his season with a 22.9-point scoring average, the second lowest of his career. He averaged 22.7 in his second season with the Chicago Bulls in 1985-86, when played just 18 games because of a broken foot.

CRICKET: LONDON: England's complaints about the use of floodlights in the third Test against New Zealand were given short shrift by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as the world governing body maintained the innovation was here to stay. ICC general manager (cricket) David Richardson said on Wednesday ``we must be mindful that players'' careers are at stake. Decisions to play in conditions which are unfair to one side or the other must be avoided, which is why we have given the umpires the discretion. ``International players, however, will understand that whilst the traditional values of our game remain paramount, they are in the entertainment business and that demands flexibility and adaptability from them.'' England had complained its fielders had struggled to see the ball as New Zealand's batsmen added 103 runs.

FOOTBALL: LONDON: Spanish powerhouse Barcelona was felled with a 77th minute penalty by Greek club Panathinaikos in the Champions Cup first leg quarterfinal on Wednesday. The 1-0 loss capped off a grim two days for Spanish sides in Europe's top competition after Real Madrid lost to Bayern Munich and Deportivo La Coruna was defeated by Manchester United on Tuesday. In anothermatch, four-time Champions Cup winner Liverpool edged German league leader Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 at Anfield with a goal from Sami Hyypia.

TEHRAN: Anyang LG of Korea defeated Iran's Esteghlal 2-1 on Wednesday in the semifinal of the Asian Club Championship. After a scoreless first half, Mario A.M. Ivo of Anyang scored in the 55th minute off a header from a corner shot. Six minutes later, Esteghlal's Yadollah Akbari, who was awaiting permission from Chinese referee Lu Jun to leave the match, scored Esteghlal's only goal. Andre L.A. Santos scored Anyang's winning goal in the 72nd minute.

MARATHON: BOSTON: With a discourse on patriotism and a defiant ``Let's roll,'' Boston Marathon organisers and an unprecedented assembly of law enforcement officials promised a safe day for runners and spectators when the event is run for the first time since Sept. 11. ``Our biggest concern at this point is the weather,'' said Tom Irvin, the police chief in Hopkinton, where almost 17,000 runners are expected to line up on Patriots Day, April 15, for the race to Boston's Back Bay. Security is at a high, with 1,500 police and three state police helicopters guarding the course along with 415 National Guard troops and another 1,500 security personnel. Bomb-sniffing dogs, hazardous materials teams and radiation detectors have been added or increased this year.

TENNIS: NEW YORK: Andre Agassi was the first pick in Wednesday's World Team Tennis draft, highlighted by among other things, the retention of John McEnroe's rights by the New York Hamptons, owned by brother Patrick. Agassi, winner of seven Grand Slam titles, was assigned to the Sacramento Capitals. Agassi has said he will join the league, which plays between July 8-28. Other top players drafted included Lindsay Davenport, whose rights were traded by the St. Louis Aces to the New York Buzz, who then drafted Davenport. The second pick was Max Mirnyi of Belarus, a doubles specialist. He was taken by the Kansas City Explorer.
