Stray incidents in Gujarat

By Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD APRIL 5. A day after the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's peace mission to riot-torn Gujarat, the scale of violence showed considerable decline today.

The normality was marred late in the evening with two incidents of stabbing in Kalupur and Vatva localities. Both the injured have been admitted to hospital where the condition of one was stated to be critical.

An indefinite curfew was clamped in Lunawada town in the tribal-dominated Panchamahals district following incidents of arson and stone-throwing. The trouble sparked off from a scuffle between the drivers of an autorickshaw and a tractor, belonging to rival communities, over a minor accident. Soon, the people from the two communities joined the fray and indulged in heavy stone-throwing. At least three shops and cabins were set on fire, forcing the police to impose indefinite curfew. One person was killed in police firing in violence in Modasa town in north Gujarat on Thursday despite the indefinite curfew.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, held a high-power committee meeting of officials today for the implementation of the relief and rehabilitation package announced by the Prime Minister on Thursday.

A Government spokesman said steps were being taken to implement the package at the earliest to improve the conditions of the riot-hit people in the State.
