Tank shelling and helicopter missile fire in a refugee camp in the West Bank city continued for the fifth straight day. Gunfire exchanges and sniper strikes in Nablus, another northern West Bank hotspot, left eight Palestinians dead. ``In Jenin, we are at the verge of ending the fighting in the refugee camp,'' the Army spokesman, Brig. Gen. Ron Kitrey, said. ``The resistance there was very tough, perhaps tougher than estimated.'' Brig. Gen. Kitrey, however, made clear that the troops would not pull out of the camp once the fighting ends.
Sharon defends offensive
The Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, opened a Cabinet meeting today in which he defended Israel's offensive and praised the 11 Israeli soldiers who had died.
