Fire destroys varsity lab

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI APRIL 8. Laboratory equipment, chemicals, furniture and U.P.S. system electrical fittings were destroyed in a fire which broke out on the first floor of the chemistry laboratory in the Bharathidasan University campus at Suriyur last night. The blaze, suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, raged for almost two hours, before fire units from Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Tiruvarambur etc. brought it under control. In the intensity of the fire, the laboratory walls and floor developed minor cracks. Though it was a holiday some students were performing experiments on the laboratory in the ground floor when they heard noise and saw smoke emanating from the first floor around 8 p.m. They alerted the university staff, and students from the hostel rushed to the spot with water buckets. The laboratory door was locked. M. Mariappan, Vice-Chancellor, who was on the spot during the fire fighting operations, praised the students for rising to the occasion.
