The party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, went into a huddle with Ummareddy Venkateswarlu, MP, Lal Jan Basha, MP and general secretary and other senior leaders at NTR Bhavan here on Tuesday to take stock of the situation in the strife-torn State.Sources said Mr. Naidu was perturbed over the "failure" of the Gujarat Government to stem the violence. The leaders are understood to have discussed the "growing isolation" of the BJP and its "declining political fortunes". One view was that as an ally, the Telugu Desam was being made to bear the cross for the BJP's mistakes. The party condemning the violence in the State, including the attack on journalists at the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram, demanded early return to normality. It, however, refrained from seeking the removal of the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi. The sources said Mr. Naidu was worried because a section of the media interpreted his comments as being sympathetic to the BJP. He regretted that he was quoted as saying that sacking Mr. Modi was no solution to the problem.
