Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Not secularism

Sir, — The open letter by Mushirul Hasan to Yasser Arafat (April 9) is an almost perfect expression of why "secularism" has such little credit among many Indians. Mr. Hasan is outraged that India has extended diplomatic recognition to Israel. Egypt and Jordan did so long ago. Why must India be more Arab than the Arabs themselves? Mr. Hasan tries to horrify Mr. Arafat by informing him that Golwalkar sympathised with Nazism. Doesn't Mr. Hasan know that Mr. Arafat's uncle and the previous leader of the Palestinians, the Mufti of Jerusalem, was one of the most prominent foreign collaborators of Hitler during the Second World War?
