U.S. visa rules

Sir, — The proposed new U.S. visa rules will not be happily received though one can see that they are justified from the point of view of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Hundreds of Indians visit their children in the U.S. every year. Air travel being expensive, no one would like to spend so much money to visit the U.S. just for 26 days, with four days spent in travel.

The new rules permit a six-month stay for visitors in case of compelling reasons. They may be suitably amended to permit and confirm a six-month stay.

S. Venkateswaran,
Chennai
